Tibet to reopen for tourists on 1st May 2008
Tibet will reopen to tourists from both home and abroad on May 1, the region's Bureau of Tourism announced on Thursday.
Zhanor, the bureau's deputy director, said all travel agencies would be allowed to arrange tours, and independent travelers would also be welcome.

The regional government stopped issuing tourist permits to foreigner travelers on March 16 and the bureau recommended Chinese travel organizations postpone tour plans after the March 14 riot in Lhasa.
Zhang Qingli, secretary of the Tibet Autonomous Regional Committee of the Communist Party of China, said earlier that normal social order should be brought back as soon as possible to embrace for tourist arrivals during the International Labor Day holiday.

Tibet's "open image and sound environment" would be presented to the visitors, the official said. The riots erupted in the holy city on March 14. Rioters set fire to more than 300 locations, including shops, homes, banks, government offices, and smashed and burned 56 vehicles, mainly in downtown Lhasa.

In the wake of the outbreak of the riot, the regional government, which did not impose a ban on travelers to the region,"suggested travel agencies suspend organizing tourists to come to Tibet," said Wang Songping, deputy director of the regional tourism bureau.
In addition to safety concerns, Wang explained the decision as "Tourism facilities around scenic spots, such as the Jokhang temple, have suffered considerable damages in the riot, lowering the reception capability."Following the turmoil, the Tibetan region's foreign affairs office suspended issuing travel permits to foreigners, citing safety concerns.

Over the past few years, especially with the official operation of Qinghai-Tibet Railway in July 2006, the first railway to connect Tibet with the outside world, tourism has developed into a pillar industry in this northwest China's plateau region.

In the first two months of the year, the tourism business grew robustly in the region, greeting 110,000 tourists, including 6,000 from the overseas, up 60 percent year on year. The March figure has not been released, but March is never the tourism peak season for Tibet, local tourism officials said.

Tourists visiting the plateau city these days would find by chance they need not stand in a line for these hard-to-get tickets. On March 26, ten days after it was closed for security reasons over the riots, the Potala Palace was reopened to tourists.

In the first day, however, only 24 tourists and 75 Tibetan Buddhism followers stepped into the palace, which is on the world cultural heritage list.

Despite the shadow of the Lhasa riot over the hearts of tourists, the spectacular natural sceneries and unique cultural attractions of Tibet would always lure an ever-increasing number of tourists, both domestic and foreign, said Zhanuo, deputy director of the regional tourism bureau.

So far, 80 percent of the stores damaged in the riot have successively come back into operation. Except for those in the severely inflicted Barkhor Street and Ramoche Temple regions, all other leading shops, supermarkets and farm produce fairs have re-opened in Lhasa.

Tibet received 4 million tourists from both home and abroad in 2007, up 60 percent from 2006. The tourism revenue reached 4.8 billion yuan (677million U.S. dollars), accounting for more than 14 percent of the region's gross domestic product.

The remote southwestern region has seen a tourism boom in the past few years, especially since the Qinghai-Tibet railway began operation in July 2006. Sourced from Gov.cn

TIMS to be implemented from January 1st 2008

With the objective of maintaining the database of trekkers and discouraging illegal operation in trekking business, Trekking Agencies’ Association of Nepal (TAAN) and Nepal Tourism Board (NTB) are all prepared to implement the Trekkers’ Information Management System (TIMS) from 1st January 2008. Both the organisations have already signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for the effective implementation of TIMS.
As per the provision, all trekkers should have the valid TIMS Certificate that is distributed free of charge by the TIMS counters of TAAN and NTB.
‘After many months of struggle and lobbying with the government, we have finally succeeded in introducing the TIMS. TAAN is hopeful that the new system would discourage illegal operation in trekking business,’ Jyoti Adhikari, president of TAAN, told a press conference and general convention of TAAN organised on 23rd December. Adhikari further informed that the TIMS mechanism would help secure business for government authorized trekking agents as it discourages independent trekking leaders that were robbing the trekking agents off their business.
TAAN has devised separate TIMS certificates for Organised and Individual Trekkers. For the effective distribution of TIMS certificates, TAAN will use the offices of all its member agents as TIMS Counter. Trekking agencies that aren’t affiliated with TAAN, however, have to get TIMS certificates from either TAAN Secretariat or NTB. Similarly, TAAN’s Pokhara Chapter member agencies of TAAN Pokhara Chapter will distribute TIMS Certificate in Pokhara.
‘The agencies have to file the database of trekkers to TAAN Secretariat within a day. The database will become useful to rescue the trekkers during the emergencies. Also it will help us to ascertain the number of trekkers in a particular trekking route,’ Adhikari added.
TAAN’s announcement to implement the TIMS was accepted by thunderous applause of its general members. The members requested the TAAN Executive Committee to fix the criteria for individual trekkers, lobby in maintaining one-window policy for all concerned services and the effective publicity of the TIMS.
TAAN has said that it would collect Rs. 100 per trekkers from the trekking agency against the TIMS. TAAN intends to use the collected amount for rescue, tourism awareness, publicity and administrative expenses.
Speaking on the occasion, Lila Bahadur Baniya, manager at NTB, said that NTB would promote the benefits of TIMS through its channels. ‘We are hopeful that the TIMS mechanism will help discourage illegal trekking operation. It will be a win-win situation to both the government and the private sectors,’ Baniya added.
For the effective implementation of TIMS, TAAN has constituted a 15-member TIMS Monitoring Taskforce under the chairmanship of executive member D.B. Gurung.
Speaking on the occasion, TAAN 2nd vice president Bachchu Narayan Shrestha requested the support and cooperation of the general members to successfully implement TIMS.

Yeti footprints traced in Khumbu !!
If Joshua Gates, team leader of the expedition of the American television channel Destination Truth, is to be believed, Yeti is no longer a legend. The expedition, that was in the Everest Region for a week, returned to Kathmandu on November 30 with an exciting story of finding footprints of Yeti near the base camp of Mt. Everest.
Showing the model of footprint to the media, Gates added that some scientific research would continue in the US regarding its authenticity and other phases of exploration for further studies.
The expedition team flew to Kathmandu aboard a chartered chopper immediately after discovering the footprint by the confluence of Ghette Khola and Dudhkoshi near Monjo village.
Tula Bahadur Rai, assistant guide of team, spotted the footprint by the riverbank.
Though the existence of Yeti has remained a myth, climbers to Mt. Everest and other high mountain peaks, have narrated the sightings of hairy, humpbacked ape like creature in the Himalayan valleys. Sir Edmund Hillary had even taken the supposed skull of Yeti from Khumjung Monastery for scientific tests. The skull later proved to be of Himalayan bear. Khumjung Monastery still has the skull which attracts hundreds of trekkers every year to the Monastery.

Chinese trekkers increasing in Annapurna Region :
The number of Chinese trekkers in different routes in Annapurna Region is gradually increasing. The increase in the number of Chinese trekkers in the Annapurna Region has excited tourism entrepreneurs in the region. According to Annapurna Conservation Area’s site office in Birethanti, more than five hundred Chinese visitors have already visited Ghandruk via Ghorepani and Poonhill. Until last year, the number of Chinese trekkers was not noticeable. However, Chinese trekkers complained that they couldn’t get any information about Nepal in China.
They also said that they visited Nepal only after they could get some information about Nepal published in the Chinese edition of popular guide book ‘Lonely Planet’. With the increase in Chinese visitors, the Annapurna Conservation Area Project (ACAP) has said that it would publish brochures about ACAP in Chinese from the next season. China included Nepal in its Approved Destination Status (ADS) list in 2003. The number of Chinese visitors coming to Nepal has increased by 123% in the first ten months of 2007 as compared to the arrival figure of 2006 where a total of 5,028 Chinese visitors had visited Nepal. The number is expected to rise further in the next two months.
